Rewire 2022

07/04/2022 @ 12:00 - 10/04/2022 @ 23:00

In the past few months we have announced a wide range of artists and projects, including Meredith Monk, Ryoji Ikeda & Les Percussions de Strasbourg, Grouper, Jenny Hval, aya, Circuit de Yeux, The Caretaker & Weirdcore, JJJJJerome Ellis, and Bang on a Can All-Stars. This programme combines new and old musical traditions, opening up new sonic worlds to be discovered.

Rewire is proud to present Indonesian composer Dewa Alit and his ensemble Gamelan Salukat for a unique concert of Alit’s distinguished gamelan music. Vocalist/composer Stine Janvin and choreographer Ula Sickle will perform ‘Echoic Choir’, a new collaborative work that references elements of rave culture and evokes the collective ritual of coming together on a dance floor. The 2022 festival features live premieres by Caterina Barbieri, Evian Christ, Jameszoo’s Blind Group, and claire rousay + ensemble, Pavel Milyakov & Yana Pavlova, Lamin Fofana, Joachim Badenhorst & Hiele, Flock, Gagi Petrovic, Dali Muru & The Polyphonic Swarm. Also premiering new music and performances are Coby Sey, Dasom Baek, Golin, Holly Childs & Gediminas Žygus, Marina Herlop, Mathijs Leeuwis, SKY H1 & Mika Oki. In addition, Anna von Hausswolff, Tirzah, and Tarta Relena will perform their latest albums.

In addition, The Bug featuring Dis Fig, Flowdan, and Manga Saint Hilare, Eartheater featuring LEYA, Jerusalem In My Heart, Anna Meredith, Alabaster DePlume, Nkisi, Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer, Debit, Oceanic & Ensemble Klang, Dis Fig, and Lisa and the F.I.X.. Mathijs Leeuwis will perform an adapted reduced sensory stimulus duo-concert next to his previously announced band show.

Rewire and iii present Proximity Music: Sensing After Thought, a playful and interdisciplinary exhibition in and around the new cultural venue Amare, consisting of eleven performances and (sound-)artworks that temporarily inhabit and activate the multi-layered foyers and the surrounding streets. Featuring works by Angelo Custódio (presented in collaboration with Das Leben am Haverkamp), Arvid & Marie, Davide Tidoni, Gemma Luz Bosch & Jurriaan de Vos, Jacqueline Kiyomi Gork, Jesus Canuto Iglesias, Kaffe Matthews, Kexin Hao, Mihalis Shammas, Mint Park & Quiet Ensemble, Soyun Park & Wellsgoodness.

The Rewire 2022 discourse programme returns to ground the festival lineup into meaningful segments and lasting considerations on the many folds of contemporary music. Bringing together artists, performers and thinkers for a series of conversations, readings, listenings and screenings, this year’s discourse programme will circle around three key themes – NOISE, AFFECT and RITUAL.

The discourse programme include keynotes by Marcel Cobussen and Luis Manuel Garcia-Mispireta; conversations between Jana Rush and Caroline Claus, Bianca Ludewig and Nkisi, Stine Janvin & Ula Sickle and Tactology Lab curators Dianne Verdonk & Roald van Dillewijn. There will be artist talks by Meredith Monk, The Caretaker, Lamin Fofana with JJJJJerome Ellis, and Debit. In addition, a reading group on bell hooks hosted by M Lamar; a film installation of soramimi by FUJI|||||||||||TA; a series of seminars by Brandon LaBelle; a panel Talking About Music with iii; a Music Writing Workshop; and a zine which includes contributions from Grouper and poet Momtaza Mehri.

Rewire 2022 also features a diverse and in-depth film programme, screening from 7 – 10 April in Filmhuis Den Haag. Part of the film selection is a focus programme on Meredith Monk that includes her 1977 film opus Quarry, a documentary on the artistic practice of Matthew Herbert and new works by Peter Tscherkassky, Aura Satz, and Erik Carel and Veronika Kusumaryati.

Final additions to the music programme are BFTT, DEBONAIR, Carl Gari & Abdullah Miniawy, Cheb Runner, Ecko Bazz, Eddy Rakovic, LEYA, Mika Oki, Nelly, Scratcha DVA, Yamila, SOON, and Slumberland feat. Sainkho Namtchylak (presented in collaboration with De Brakke Grond and STUK).

3-day festival passes (admission on 8, 9 and 10 April) are available for €99, as well as individual day tickets, at: www.rewirefestival.nl.
